The Institut shows you the advantages of living without tobacco (#vivirsintabaco)
Tobacco smoke –which contains over 4,000 toxic substances– is a killer. It can also leave us in the dark. The particles of tobacco smoke –carbon monoxide, arsenic, toluene, methanol, ammonia etc. – are responsible for countless serious illnesses that can affect us all, those who smoke and those who don’t.
Smokers have a fourfold risk of blindness although it is not only active smokers who may be affected. Those who live with smokers and who, therefore, are passive smokers double their chances of suffering from age-related macular degeneration. Smoking is responsible for 25% of cases of macular degeneration.
In addition to macular degenerations, tobacco smoke also doubles the risk of smokers suffering from cataracts, the leading cause of vision loss in the world. In the case of women who smoke during pregnancy, this increases the risk of the baby developing strabismus or retinopathy of prematurity among other endemic problems.
Because of all this, we at the Institut de la Màcula encourage you to live without tobacco (#vivirsintabaco), because smoking can leave us in the dark.
